The other day, I visited a large corporation in my city, and I noticed few interesting things about the way my friend that worked there and his colleagues communicate in order to achieve their goals and to finish the projects they are involved in. My first guess was that besides the Internet wires, they needed telephone wires and additional wires for the intranet to sustain all the possible ways of communication. Later, my friend told me that most organizations use special services that combines all their needs into a single line, thus reducing the costs and improving the performances. So, I thought it would be a great idea to write an article about it here…
The new ways by which information is send and received in an organization has great impact on the productivity and efficiency of the business. The globalization of the economy requires a new analysis of the way businesses conduct their activities, and new perspective emerges to meet the standards of modern times. In today’s business environment, the communication between the departments of one organization or between departments of various organizations is a must. These types of channels lead to positive changes, to growth in the economic activities, to change in the mentalities and attitudes of the business owners. The efficiency found in business communication determines the success of a company, and it is felt at every possible layer.
Groupware is a comprehensive term that describes electronic technologies that facilitate inter-personal collaboration between people and entities. It includes e-mails, electronic meeting systems (EMS), video-conference systems (DVC) and Business Process Reengineering (BPR). The ultimate goal of the groupware is to create a near-perfect environment for team work, independently of the geographic position of the team members.
Multimedia communications are defined as a combination
of different communications channels synchronous and asynchronous, that may be used interactively. The purpose of many multimedia system is to facilitate the collaboration between teams by providing the best possible means for its members to interact. The central core of a multimedia system is its graphical interface that processes all the videos and images. There are plenty of “Shared-view” and “Joint editing” applications out there that increase the productivity of developers and testers, even if they are hundred of miles away. In addition, these multimedia systems have special instruments for sharing the digital information. In other words, these integrated channels represent the best solution for real-time communication needed in a virtual organization.
Most business owners chose to use Integrated Services Digital Network or ISDN as their means of communication. This technology is able to transmit audio and video data through a circuit-switched telephone network system. Although ISDN was first designed to transfer digital information at the Basic Rate Interface of 128 kbit / s through a standard telephone wires made of copper, later revisions of the technology implemented Primary Rate Interface (PRI), a standard that allows up 2048 kbit / s over a standard T1, and it’s now available in many countries of the world. Many companies that use the initial ISDN protocol should opt for a business line replacement and upgrade for higher internet speeds and better functionality.
Another advantage of ISDN technology is the possibility of simultaneous calls (one call per channel), and that’s really useful in case of business organizations.
