Scientists warns about a possible natural phenomenon with large implications. Campi Flegrei is a large volcano located near Naples. It erupted the last time hundreds of years ago. However, lately, the researchers have detected a series of small earthquakes that occur here, caused by the inner magma movement.
Data obtained with seismographs shows that this volcano has woken up and is becoming dangerous. The pressure builds up in the magma chamber, which is just beneath the city of Pozzuoli and extends under the sea to a depth of 4 km. When the pressure reaches the critical point, the eruption will take place. The event will be catastrophic for the 1.5 million people living in the Naples region.
At this time, it is impossible to estimate when the eruption will occur. The biggest eruption of this super volcano occurred 39,000 years ago, when the hot rock and ash pieces reached up to 70 km altitude in the stratosphere.
Researchers believe that this disaster played an important role in the disappearance of the Neanderthal Man. In Italy, Campi Flegrei means “field of fire”. This volcano is considered the most dangerous volcano in Europe.
