A new method to eradicate nosocomial infections in hospitals

A new method to eradicate nosocomial infections in hospitals

Science
One of the main problems in hospitals is to create and maintain a sterile environment that will protect the patients from getting diseases from the contaminated objects around them. These types of infections are called nosocomial infections (urinary and respiratory tract infections, wound infections) and they could become very dangerous to the human body, since they are resistant to antibiotics and natural treatments. Scientists observed how memories are formed in the brain

Scientists observed how memories are formed in the brain

Science
Once upon a time, the human memory was considered the unique diary that we carry with us until we depart from this world. Now, a team of researchers led by Don Arnold and Richard Roberts at the University of California managed to observe the way this diary is written by our brain. In order to perform the experiment, scientists used microscopic probes that "lighted" the neuron synapses by attaching fluorescent markers in synaptic proteins, without affecting the normal function of the neurons to function. Fluorescent markers allowed the team of researchers to observe how synapses are excited or inhibited and, for the first time, they have observed the way memories are formed in the brain. (more…)

World Cities Seen from Space

World Cities Seen from Space

Science
We, as humans, have achieved a great deal of things in the last century especially in the fields of medicine and technology. Even so, as we look at the sky at night we never stop wondering about what's really out there in Space. Although scientists are trying really hard to explain physical phenomena related to the planets and stars, when the night comes, we feel increasingly smaller in an infinite Universe and this thought can only fade away when we switch on the artificial lights around us. A collection of interesting facts about human feet

Science
So, the story is short. My aunt asked me to search on the Internet for information on an annoying problem that's bothering her for years. Of course, she is old and her age is part of the problem. But while I was trying to find some useful information on the matter I came across many more common foot problems that are usually easy to spot and easy to prevent. If you know someone that experiences bunions, calluses, corns, claw toes, hammer toes or arch strain then you need to advice him/she to follow this foot regimen: Washing the feet every day with soap Don't be lazy. Walking 1 mile per day is good for the heart, but also great for the feet. You need to wear shoes that are comfy…

Higgs boson (God Particle) confirmed

Higgs boson (God Particle) confirmed

Science
Since ancient times man has been trying to link science and divinity in order to put at peace the mind and the soul altogether. For far too long the scientists groups and the religious camps have been regarded as an antithesis while rare genius minds that believed in a strong link between the two ideologies have strived to prove that the science facts are in a strong relationship with divine beliefs. From Leonardo da Vinci to Einstein the idea of science not denying religion has grown in the minds and souls of man and now we are in front of the biggest discovery in this direction: the existence of the Higgs boson is confirmed 100%. The “God particle” is celebrated throughout the world by scientists and its confirmation comes, odd…

Lemon Battery: How to create electricity with fruits

Lemon Battery: How to create electricity with fruits

Science
We are facing a real trend of folks converting to green energy. This can be achieved by using solar powered generators or wind turbines. Creating electricity from fruits will not give you enough juice to power your gadgets, but in some cases it can generate just enough to power a small LED. This is probably the simplest science project every kid has experimented or heard about at least once in his lifetime.  The most effective fruit to use in this project is the lemon.   (more…)
